Finally, there’s a new way to get the most out of your chats by adding some extra fun with a few in-built games. For example, just send your friend a basketball emoji and they can hit back at you by shooting hoops on a virtual court. There’s also a built-in game where you can play virtual ping-pong with a friend. It’s pretty simple and only uses the microphone on your phone, so it won’t drain your battery.

Themes

Facebook has rolled out a few features to make messaging even more fun. For example, chat themes like love and tie-dye are available for a more unique experience. Similarly, selfie stickers and personalized reactions are also coming to Messenger. And soon, you’ll be able to use Messenger Rooms for joinable video calls with up to 50 people. Themes will be especially useful for end-to-end encrypted conversations. Previously, Messenger didn’t offer any way to personalize E2EE chats. The new theme feature allows you to choose a custom color for the conversation, as well as emojis and reactions. And you can even add a background for your private conversations.

Currently, you can apply a dark theme to your chat on iOS and iPad by tapping on the menu and selecting ‘Chat settings’. From there, you can select a dark or light theme for your conversation. You can also enable a ‘System’ setting to automatically switch between dark and light mode based on your device’s schedule.

Other chat enhancements include the ability to share your contact info on a full screen and a quick reply bar for responding to images and videos. You can also view your messages in a separate tab when viewing your profile. You can also block anyone you don’t want to hear from. And if you get tired of seeing a particular emoticon, you can change it to another one from a list.

Sending money

While Messenger offers a number of features, including one-on-one and group text messaging, it also has a few neat features for sending money. It allows you to send and receive payments from friends and family. You can add your debit card, or a PayPal account (fees may apply), and use it to make payments from within the app.

To use this feature, open a conversation with the person you want to pay. Then, click the dollar sign icon in the chat. This will bring up a payment window where you can enter the amount you want to send. You can also include a note in the window to help you remember what the transaction was for.

You can now mute calls, reactions to messages, and Messenger games, or only turn on notifications for when you’re @ mentioned in the thread. Adding a nickname to your contacts in Messenger is very easy on Android phones and iPhones. To do so, open a chat and tap on the contact’s name or the icon with an exclamation point at the top of the display. On Android, tapping the (i) in the top right will also work. Then, tap “Nicknames.” The nicknames you’ve assigned to the person will be displayed on their chat bubble. It’s worth noting that nicknames don’t change the person’s actual name on your friend list, nor do they affect their status in your Messages.

Companies like Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google have been forced to open up their systems and hand out information about their users see trannyporn. At the same time they have been forbidden to tell anyone about it!

We’re building a message app where no one can listen in, not even us. We would rather close down the service before letting anyone in.

When will Hemlis be released?

The simple answer is, when it’s done. We will of course release it as fast as possible, as we want this ourselves! You can follow the development on our blog plus Twitter and Facebook.

How much will the app cost?

The application will be free but we will charge a small fee (via an in-app purchase) to unlock certain features. We do this to fund the continuing development and infrastructure.

Will it be Open Source?

We have all intentions of opening up the source as much as possible for scrutiny and help!

Will you release Hemlis on other platforms?

First is iOS and Android. Once we have accomplished that, it’s only natural that we expand to other platforms as well.

Is it really secure?

Yes and no. Nothing is ever 100% secure. There will not be any way for someone without access to your phone to read anything, but with access to your phone they can of course read the messages. Just as they can use any other app you have installed.

What kind of users are your target?

In short, everyone. One of the key points of Hemlis is to make the app as user friendly as possible so as to remove the high threshold that is usually associated with encryption software and services.

Your server only?

Yes, the way to make the system secure is that we can control the infrastructure. Distributing to other servers makes it impossible to give any guarantees about the security.

Why is Hemlis different from WhatsApp, Line, iMessage etc?

Our focus is your privacy so we are building everything from software to company structure to protect that.

Does Hemlis save every message on a server?

Yes and No. Messages will be stored on our servers until they have been delivered. If they are not in due time they will be thrown away (and you can send it again from your device).

Can I invest in Hemlis?

If you are talking about investing money for equity and/or control, no. To guarantee the safety of our users we can not accept any money “with strings attached”.

What technology will Hemlis use?

We are actually using the asymmetric encryption capabilities of Daniel J. Bernstein’s nacl or more specifically the libsodium implementation of it.

Why not use OTR?

We love OTR but it’s not really feasible to use in a mobile environment yet. OTR needs both parties to be online for a session to start, phones are not always online. So it would not work at all for offline messages.

Will you provide an API and/or allow third party clients?

At this point we don’t see how that would be possible without compromising the security, so for now the answer is no.

Why the name?

Hemlis means “Secret” in Swedish. And .is is the top level domain of Iceland, a small but beautiful nation in northern Europe. The Icelanders are famous for data protection and it’s one of few top level domains that has proven that they do not cave in to pressure easily.

Who is doing this?

Why are you doing this?

Primarily the leak from Edward Snowden made us understand that this is needed. We don’t want a world where everyone is monitored all the time. People have a right to be private and this is our way of enabling them.
